A Rundown of our First Week of Classes

Last June 13, Wednesday, was the first day of the twins' kindergarten class.  We had a bit of a hectic morning- waking up, giving them their breakfast, giving them a bath, and dressing them up for school (they don't have uniforms, they just have a color of the day!).  And then we had to rush them to the place where they will be picked up by the school bus.  All in all, they (including the yaya), had to carry their back packs, and two other bags which contained their banig, pillows, boots, slippers, and umbrellas. No food needed as the school provides them with a heavy merienda (but just in case, I placed bread sticks and yogurt on their bags).

We never had crying scenes with them ever since they enrolled in Tuburan.  Over the summer, they had play classes and we never had difficulty in waking them up for their 8.30am class and we never had difficulty leaving them.  Even if you ask them at night if they want to go to school the next day, they would say yes.  If we wake them up in the morning to tell them that it's time to wake up to prepare for school, they would wake up.  Of course at times, there would be tantrums (the typical bagong gising syndrome!), but eventually it will pass off.  They would have their breakfast, take a bath and prepare for school.  The bottom line is, I guess, the kids love their school.  It's not stressful for them to be in a school.  And that's the kind of school I want them to be in at this stage of their life.

What gives me a bit of stress in the mornings is thinking about what to give them for lunch in school.  Their class ends at 12nn so before all the kids are sent home, they have to eat their lunch at school.  The thing is, lunch must be vegetarian (the school is nestled in a vegetarian village).  My kids eat vegetables, but it's always paired with some meat (chicken, pork or beef).  So it takes, I believe, ingenuity to be able to let them eat pure vegetables (without meat!).

On the first day, no lunch for them.  I was thinking that they can probably be home at 12.30pm and since they had heavy merienda in school, they wouldn't be that hungry.  I had it all wrong.  Yaya said both were cranky and hungry when class ended.  So we hurriedly bought them a baunan to bring to class on the 2nd day.  They had squash and malunggay on the 2nd day.  They're familiar with these vegetables.  My kids love lau-uy (they have this everyday for lunch plus meat).  Yaya said they ate their lunch.  Good.  The third day was a bit different.  Calix woke up asking that he be given crunchy chicken for lunch.  I had to carefully explain to him that chicken is not allowed in school and that his lunch consisted of baked potatoes and talong with cheese.  He declared, "HINDI AKO KAIN LUNCH MA!".  And I got worried.  But being the mother, apart from his lunch, I included biscuits and yogurt (just in case he won't eat his veggies).  When I picked them up, Yaya said they both ate their veggies.  Yay!  They even ate sitaw in school (nice!).  I have no problem with Caleb though, he loves cheese.  So veggies plus cheese is fine for him.

Next week, I'm making a menu- from Monday to Friday.  I downloaded some on the internet and I even bought a magazine!  And oh, I also asked my aunt for some Magic Meat.  Will let you know what I've come up for next week.

In the meantime, here's a picture of their school:

This is the planting area.

I love the school's environment.  It's clean and so natural.  I believe the kids love it too!
