On Fast Food versus Proper Nutrition
Earlier this morning, after dropping the kids off at the school, I was browsing over my Twitter feed (hubby was driving, don't worry!). A famous celebrity, someone who I look up to and a lot of people look up to, tweeted this:
@--------------- my power breakfast from @McDo_ph! how are you starting your day?
I admit, we eat at fast food joints sometimes. I don't love fast food joints, but I sometimes like to eat what they offer. And then there's the occasional happy or kiddie meal for the kids. We sometimes crave for burgers, fries, and the like. I crave for McDonald's mostly, sometimes Jollibee or KFC. The thing is though, I know and we all know, fast food is unhealthy.
So when this celebrity tweeted the statement above, I got a bit upset. Upset foremost because it's again the social media versus parents who are conscious about proper nutrition. I know, she has every right to post it. That's what freedom of speech is. However, judging from the fact that she is a celebrity and that a lot of people look up to her, I think it's but proper for her not to categorize a McDo breakfast as a power breakfast. How do you explain to your kids that a power breakfast is not a McDo or fast food joint breakfast, when a lot of celebrities are tweeting about foods they have tasted from fast food joints? How do you explain what proper nutrition is when a lot of people we look up to are endorsing and posting about fast food on their social networking sites?
The use of social media is a responsibility, more so for the people who are more socially exposed and have more social media power. They should be more prudent on what they post on social networking sites. And hey, Bianca, I had home made mashed potatoes for breakfast and bananas. My kids had rice, ham and mashed potatoes too! That's what you call a power breakfast.
Do you agree?
