Toddlers and Antibiotics

The other night, at around midnight, we had to rush our youngest to the Emergency Room.  He started having chills (this is something we can manage) but then he suddenly turned black.  This made us panic and so off we went to Davao Doctor's.  Surprisingly, we had a good experience at the ER of Davao Doc.  I was earlier consumed with negative thoughts as some of people I know had bad experiences.  The resident doctor was very nice, the nurses and the medtech were also very accommodating.  We were able to go home after he was given a suppository (I learned this is a must in one's medicine cabinet!) for his fever and after a routine CBC and urinalysis.  Although the results were not yet available, the youngest was adamant that he wanted to go home because his older sibling was not there with him (Ahia had to stay at home with Grandpa).  I was glad that he wasn't admitted.  I heaved a sigh of relief.  I don't like admitting kids to hospitals.  I believe it's traumatic for them.

At around 2pm, my husband went back to the hospital to get the result.  Findings- UTI (urinary tract infection).  We were then given a prescription for Antibiotics.  However, not wanting to rely on the resident doctor, we also visited our pediatrician yesterday morning.  Our pedia, Dr. Bernardo, concurred with the findings and prescribed the same medicine that the resident doctor prescribed.  So off we went to the pharmacy to buy it.

I crossed my fingers that the antibiotics would taste good or better.  My kids never liked antibiotics.  Does your kid like antibiotics?  We always had difficulty making them drink.  They would vomit it, we would quarrel, we would beg, we would intimidate them, just so that they would drink their antibiotics (I wonder why pharmaceutical companies can't make a better tasting antibiotic?).  I tasted the medicine, it was sweet at first, bitter after.  And oh, it left an aftertaste.  So I had an idea we're going to have difficulty making him drink his medicine.  So when the time came for Shoti to drink his medicine, he vomitted everything.  It took us more than 1 hour to make him drink.  We forced him to drink, he spit it all out.  We mixed it with milk, he spit it all out again.  Shoti said it tasted yucky and like baby powder (lol!).  Finally, his father mixed it with water.  He drank it but not after his father promised him a toy (hahaha!).  We wasted two days worth of medicine.

So yesterday afternoon, I asked a mom/grandma how they make their kids drink antibiotics.  Ate Fely suggested mixing it with condensed milk- 1 part antibiotic, 2 parts condensed milk.  It worked on her granddaughter.  We tried it last night, unsuccessful. He did not want to drink it.  He said it smelled like his yucky medicine.  Good thing we brought home an ice cream since we promised the twins we'd bring home one.  We first tried mixing it with ice cream, he did not like it.  So what we did next was to make him drink a spoon of medicine and then a spoon of ice cream after.  Another spoon of medicine, and then another spoon of ice cream. Yay!

This morning though, he did not want to drink his medicine.  After talking with him for a while, he agreed with the condition that a spoon of ice cream first before a spoon of medicine (the opposite of last night).  Yahoo! No more spill-ups of medicines.

What about you, how do you make your kids drink antibiotics?

The result of the Urinalysis.

The medicine.  Sorry, don't know how to make the picture vertical.

The life-saver.  Ice cream!
