Dilemma 101
Last week I read on Facebook that the Ateneo de Davao University will begin accepting applications for Playschool and Level II starting October 15 (that was last Monday). That status message made me stop and thinking. Wow! This early? And I thought I could postpone school hunting until January of next year. And then a co-teacher of mine sent me a tweet. I should decided ASAP since they are expecting that the slots will be full by February. Another wow! I was stressed to the nth level. Hahaha.
Our twin boys are enrolled in a Waldorf Steiner school here in Davao. From their daily attendance in school with their class from 8:30 until 12nn, they're both down to once a week (sometimes, we even skip a week.) due to health reasons. Most of the time they would get sick and we found it to be stressful not only for them, but also for us, whenever they're sick. I believe in the school's philosophy and the manner by which they teach children, which is through play. You see, I'm a firm believer that education for young children should be play based and not instructional based. I want them to learn through play. However, sometimes, what we believe must give way to what is best for our kids at a particular stage in their lives. So even if I like the school, I knew we had to consider their constant sickness that's why we scaled down to a once a week attendance.
So right now, I'm at a dilemma. My kids thrive in the school. They love the activities. They love the environment. Most importantly, they learn through play. But health wise, it's a bit difficult. Should we continue? Or should we move on?
All I know is that I want them in a non-traditional school. The one that allows tons of play and the one that does not require homework. These two things are important for me. Let the children play, please do not give them homework. So, where do we go? Do we stay? Do we move towards another kind of non traditional school? Or do we move towards a traditional school?
The clock is ticking, the days are moving. I know, I have to decide soon. I will let you know.

you know ianne, i also have the same dilemma. actually, deep inside me, i am entertaining the idea of homeschooling. i told hubby about it and he said, i might change my mind after a year. but, i still have 3 yrs to worry about it. hahaha.
ReplyDeletewe do not have too much progressive school here in davao. why are they getting sick? is it the environment?
why not try it for a year? you can always transfer if they don't like it.
homeschooling is a good idea.. it's actually a very nice one but it's difficult especially if you're a working mom (like me!)..
Deleteyeah, we don't have many progressive schools but you can now have a lot of choices unlike before.. i actually like Montessori but it's kinda expensive.. hehehe..
i don't know why they're getting sick.. but it's probably a bit stressful for them to be in school at their age that's why we withdrew to once a week.. i also don't like the idea of transferring.. i want to enroll them in a school that will cater to their education until HS..
you have 3 years to worry about.. besides, under depEd rules, kids are required to be in kindergarten only at the age of 5.. before that, no requirement to be in school :)
