The Turkey Incident
I picked up the kids at school today (mommy duties!) and while we were traversing Indangan, I saw a family of turkeys. I immediately told the kids, "Look, turkeys!". While this was happening, the red truck in front of me was slowing down and suddenly swerved to the right which made me step on the brakes. I wonder what was wrong. And then we saw a turkey flapping its wings. The kids were shouting, "Mama, ano nangyari sa turkey?". Of course, before I answered, I had to also swerve to the right to avoid hitting the injured turkey.
Now driving steadily, I had to think about what to explain to the kids. It was a bit traumatic, isn't it? How do you explain death to a 3 year old child. And then the kids exclaimed, "Ikaw Mama ha, you hit the turkey." I told them, "No. I did not hit the turkey. The red truck in front of us hit the turkey." Calix then asked, "Why? Bakit Mama?". Caleb also butted in, "Bakit tamaan ng red truck ang turkey?". I calmly told them, "Nak, maybe the driver did not see the turkey that's why natamaan." Both again asked, "Why Mama?". I answered "Maybe the turkey suddenly appeared out of nowhere that's why the driver did not see the turkey." "Bakit Mama?".
At their age, they're curious kids- very, very curious. They ask tons of questions. Sometimes the questions can be a bit exasperating. However, we have this rule to always answer them in the best possible way. We have this rule never to stop them from questioning. We want our kids to grow up and never stop asking, allowing themselves to learn more and more each day.
So how did the conversation end? I asked them, "What do you tell the Manong Driver who accidentally killed the turkey?" Calix said, "Ikaw Manong Driver ha, last na yan. Hindi ka na pwede mag-kill ng turkey." I wanted to laugh. How cute and innocent. And what about Caleb? "Oo, ikaw Manong Driver ha, last na yan."
And then out of nowhere, Calix blurted out, "Mama, diba we once had turkey? Yung dala ni Grandma? Sarap eat ng turkey Mama." Hahahaha. This was seconded by Caleb. "Oo, diba Mama dala si Grandma? Luto tayo turkey Mama?". The wonders of having kids.
